The Melanesian Institute was chosen to host the 2016 Regional Conference for Council of Churches in the Pacific from 17 – 21 October 2016.

General Secretary of the Pacific Council of Churches (PCC), Rev. François Pihaatae from Tahiti visited MI on May 11 2016 and met with the Director, Fr. Geovanne Bustos, Head of Research Department, Br. Martin Tnines and Education Department Officer, Rev. Ugufa Podi to discuss the aim and vision of the conference.

Rev. François said that MI was chosen because of the following reasons;

  • MI is a witness to ecumenical living and acts as a venue to help member Churches realise the importance of its work
  • PCC expects the Director to provide an input on the work of the Institute and its relevance for the Churches

The agendas for discussion include; the dimension of ecumenism as “repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation” and how the Churches take concrete action, to revive the “sleeping or snoring” PNG Council of Churches, to look for a renewal of ecumenism in the Pacific region at the regional and national levels and for the churches to have one voice on major issues.

35 – 40 delegates including 5 representatives from MI are expected to attend the conference.
