The Library Department was and is still an important part of the Melanesian Institute ever since it was built.

The department is made up of Miss Regina Gabriel (Head of Library Department), Br. Maurice McCallum (Chief Cataloguer) and Mr Sipe Tahe (Scanning).

The MI library currently holds 16,000 items about sociology and the Melanesian cultures and languages. Of these 16,000, 12,000 are books of famous researchers. You will also find movies, magazines and newspapers there.

Head of Library Department Miss Regina Gabriel said she is very proud to be working here as the librarian.

“The library stores so many books, articles, DVDs, CDs and tapes about the Melanesian Culture and this is the reason we have so many different people from different universities, colleges and secondary schools around Goroka and sometimes Papua New Guinea using it,” she said.

Miss Gabriel said the library‘s main aim is to be up to date every time as it is a research library.
Most students who use the library, when asked what they think about it answered that it is always up to date and offers a widespread spectrum of Melanesia.

“We also provide a media room for our users to watch DVD´s and search books in our catalogue,” Miss Gabriel said.

The online catalogue will come out as soon as possible on MI’s website at www.mi.org.pg.
