MMS 5 is a timely book as accusations of sorcery and witchcraft, which result in witch hunts, trials and brutal killings, appear to be occurring with increasing regularity throughout PNG. The aim of the research, which has resulted in this first volume, was to find out the situation in regard to the belief in and the practice of sorcery, its consequences for individuals and societies and the ideological, sociopolitical and economic factors which were driving this seemingly up surging phenomenon. It also aimed at investigating how the churches have tried or were trying to counteract sorcery beliefs and practices.

Format: PDF (Book)Melanesian Mission Studies No. 1 - Cultures and Languages of Papua New Guinea

This manual is rich in references, stories and insights. It is indeed a manual, not a reader. First, because one must read and reflect, rather than push on to the finish. Second, because the end of each chapter has a section which invites you to consider the ideas which have been presented: Summary, Key Issues, Key Concepts, Study Questions, Suggested Additional Readings and Visual Aids. This manual will be a great practical aid to anyone who is doing ministry in Papua New Guinea.
